How to treat snoring caused by a relaxed soft palate
Soft palate laxity may be caused by factors such as improper sleeping posture, aging, or tonsillitis. Snoring resulting from this condition can be treated by adjusting sleeping positions, medications, or surgical procedures.
1. Improper Sleeping Posture
Incorrect sleeping posture can cause the relaxed soft palate to compress the airway, leading to airway narrowing and snoring. It is recommended to change sleeping positions, preferably adopting a side-lying position.
2. Aging
If soft palate laxity is due to advanced age and natural bodily aging, and snoring symptoms are significant, it is advisable to seek treatment at a reputable hospital via uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), a procedure that removes the excess lax tissue of the soft palate.
3. Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is an upper respiratory tract infection primarily caused by bacterial or viral pathogens. If left untreated, prolonged inflammation can chronically irritate the soft palate and tonsils, causing tonsillar enlargement and soft palate laxity, which may lead to snoring. It is recommended to undergo tonsillectomy at a tertiary hospital.
In daily life, maintaining a healthy weight is important; individuals who are overweight should consider moderate weight loss. Proper home care is essential—diet should consist mainly of light, easily digestible foods. Avoid excessively greasy or strongly stimulating foods such as fried dough sticks and chili peppers. Consume more fresh fruits and vegetables, and drink adequate amounts of water to prevent internal heat buildup.
