What surgery is performed with a gynecological cold knife?
Gynecological cold knife generally refers to cold knife conization of the cervix. It is a surgical procedure used for the diagnosis and treatment of cervical dysplasia or very early-stage cervical cancer, involving the removal of a cone-shaped portion of the cervix to excise cervical lesions and the entire transformation zone.
This procedure is typically performed using an electrosurgical device known as LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure). It allows free rotation and enables optimized tissue resection in both horizontal and vertical planes. Compared to traditional scalpel surgery, it offers advantages such as rapid hemostasis, high precision in targeting, and ease of operation.
Physicians may choose this procedure when there is a discrepancy between cervical smear results and cervical biopsy findings, in order to determine the exact underlying cause. It is also indicated when the actual histological results are significantly lower than cytological findings, or when there are signs of severe dysplasia, even in cases of stage 1A1 cervical squamous cell carcinoma.
