Can you run after hip replacement surgery?
After hip replacement, strenuous activities such as running are not recommended to avoid wear on the replaced hip joint.
Hip prostheses used in hip replacement surgery are typically made of materials such as metal-on-polyethylene, ceramic-on-polyethylene, or ceramic-on-ceramic, all of which have a limited lifespan. Engaging in intense exercises like running after surgery may cause joint wear, increase local joint loosening, shorten the implant's service life, and lead to discomfort such as pain and impaired mobility. Therefore, strenuous activities like running are not advised.
After hip replacement, patients may engage in activities such as swimming, pull-ups, and push-ups, which can help enhance immunity and resistance to disease. However, attention should be paid to the amount and intensity of physical activity.
