Do you really have to wait a month before having sex after getting an IUD?
It is not necessary to wait a full month before resuming sexual intercourse after getting an intrauterine device (IUD). Generally, intercourse can be resumed after two weeks, depending on individual circumstances. However, if vaginal bleeding lasts a long time or significant abdominal pain occurs, sexual activity should be postponed.
Insertion of an IUD is an invasive procedure. During the placement process, the local cervical mucosa may be damaged. Vaginal bleeding commonly occurs after IUD insertion. Engaging in intercourse too early may allow pathogens to enter through injured areas of the cervix, potentially causing inflammation or infection, as well as increased bleeding and abdominal discomfort.
Most women stop bleeding within about one week after IUD insertion. If there are no discomfort symptoms, sexual intercourse can usually resume after approximately two weeks. However, some women may experience prolonged bleeding lasting more than two weeks due to poor adaptation to the IUD. In such cases, intercourse should be delayed until bleeding has completely stopped. It is not mandatory to wait a full month, but timing should be based on complete cessation of bleeding.
After IUD insertion, maintaining good hygiene is important. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for two weeks, and tub baths should also be avoided during this period. If heavy bleeding or severe abdominal pain occurs, prompt medical evaluation is recommended for anti-inflammatory and hemostatic treatment.
