What causes coughing when tired?
Coughing when tired may be related to physiological factors, or it could be associated with pathological conditions such as bronchitis, cough-variant asthma, and chronic heart failure. Symptomatic treatment should be based on the specific underlying cause.
I. Physiological Factors
Working in an excessively harsh environment and prolonged inhalation of irritating gases or particles can lead to reflexive coughing. In general, no special treatment is required—symptoms usually subside after leaving the environment.
II. Pathological Factors
1. Bronchitis
Inflammation of the bronchial mucosa can cause coughing. Especially during excessive fatigue, increased airflow speed into the respiratory tract can strongly irritate the airways, leading to abnormal bronchial contraction and progressively worsening cough symptoms. Patients are advised to take medications such as ambroxol hydrochloride oral solution, dextromethorphan tablets, or salbutamol tablets under medical guidance to relieve symptoms.
2. Cough-Variant Asthma
The main symptoms include persistent coughing, typically dry cough, which becomes more pronounced upon inhaling cold or irritating air. Some young individuals may develop asthma-like symptoms when overly fatigued, primarily due to exercise-induced airway hyperresponsiveness. Patients should follow medical advice and use inhaled medications such as budesonide inhalation preparations, fluticasone propionate inhalation aerosol, or salbutamol inhalation aerosol for symptom relief.
Additionally, patients with chronic heart failure may experience coughing after excessive exertion due to increased cardiac load. Symptomatic treatment should be administered according to the actual clinical condition.
