What causes continuous brown discharge after an abortion?
Brownish discharge after an abortion may be a normal phenomenon, but it could also indicate pathological conditions such as retained intrauterine tissue or infection.
1. Normal Phenomenon
During an abortion procedure, the uterine cavity is scraped using a suction device, which can cause minor trauma and bleeding. A small amount of blood passing through the uterus, cervix, and vagina may appear as brownish discharge. If this lasts no more than one week, it is generally considered normal and does not require special treatment.
2. Pathological Conditions
2.1 Retained Intrauterine Tissue
If embryonic tissue is not completely removed during the procedure, the remaining tissue can irritate the uterine lining, causing uterine contractions and symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding, and a sensation of pelvic pressure. An ultrasound at the hospital is recommended to check for retained tissue. If tissue remains, prompt evacuation of the uterus (re-curettage) is necessary.
2.2 Uterine Infection
Infections may occur if proper local hygiene is not maintained after the procedure, if sexual intercourse takes place too soon, or if sterilization procedures were inadequate during surgery. Inflammation from infection can lead to vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, dizziness, and other discomforts. Under a doctor's guidance, medications such as metronidazole capsules, ornidazole dispersible tablets, or amoxicillin capsules may be prescribed to control the infection and relieve symptoms.
After an abortion, adequate rest and a balanced, nutritious diet are important. If bleeding persists for an extended period, prompt medical attention is advised.
