Can you drink water during a glucose tolerance test?
OGTT usually refers to the oral glucose tolerance test. Generally, drinking water is allowed during the OGTT, but excessive intake should be avoided. The details are as follows:
The glucose tolerance test is a laboratory method used to diagnose diabetes. During the test, venous blood is first drawn while fasting to measure blood glucose levels. Then, the individual ingests 75 grams of anhydrous glucose in one dose. Blood glucose levels are subsequently measured at 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 2 hours after ingestion. Based on these results, abnormalities in glucose metabolism can be identified. Since the testing process is relatively long, drinking a small amount of water typically does not interfere with the test results. However, it is important to avoid sugary drinks and limit water intake to no more than 200 milliliters.
If abnormal glucose metabolism is diagnosed following the OGTT, it is recommended to actively pursue proper treatment under the guidance of an endocrinologist.
