Thoracentesis procedure steps
Thoracentesis is performed to treat patients with large amounts of pleural effusion who experience symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing due to lung compression. Draining the pleural fluid allows the lungs to re-expand and relieves these symptoms. The specific steps for thoracentesis are as follows:
1. Localization: Perform percussion to identify a clear area of dullness, or use ultrasound guidance to locate the site. Select the point corresponding to the deepest accumulation of fluid as the puncture site.
2. Anesthesia: Identify the puncture site and administer local anesthesia around it.
3. Puncture: Stabilize the skin with the left hand while inserting the puncture needle with the right hand. When a sensation of "loss of resistance" is felt, gently aspirate; the appearance of pleural fluid confirms successful entry into the pleural space, after which the drainage procedure may proceed.
4. Dressing: After completing the procedure, withdraw the needle and apply sterile dressing to the wound. Instruct the patient to receive oxygen and rest for 20 minutes to half an hour. Once stable, the patient may resume ambulation.
Note: The puncture needle should be inserted near the upper edge of the rib below the targeted intercostal space. Thoracentesis should only be performed at a正规 hospital by qualified medical professionals.
