What causes numbness on the scalp above the ear, and what should be done about it?
Generally, numbness in the scalp above the ear may be caused by cervical spondylosis, local poor blood circulation, tension-type headache, compressive nerve injury, or scalp disorders. Patients are advised to follow medical advice for symptomatic treatment. Specific causes are analyzed as follows:
1. Cervical Spondylosis
This is mainly related to nerve compression in the cervical spine area, or impaired blood circulation in the vertebral arteries on both sides during a spondylosis episode, leading to insufficient blood supply to the head and resulting in numbness. Dizziness may also occur. It is recommended to take medications such as ibuprofen sustained-release capsules or mecobalamin tablets under a doctor's guidance.
2. Local Poor Blood Circulation
Prolonged pressure on local tissues above the left ear due to improper posture can impair local blood supply, causing scalp numbness. This is usually a normal physiological phenomenon that resolves spontaneously.
3. Tension-Type Headache
Main symptoms include dull headache, pressure sensation, and heaviness in the head. Pain commonly occurs on both temples, the back of the head, the top of the head, or throughout the entire head. The temples correspond to the areas behind the eye sockets and above both ears. Tension-type headaches often occur during stress, fatigue, or emotional fluctuations. Medications such as oryzanol or Toutongning capsules may be used as directed by a physician.
4. Compressive Nerve Injury
Wearing hard or overly tight hats or other items may compress sensory nerves in the scalp, leading to nerve injury and numbness. Vitamin B supplements or mecobalamin capsules may be taken as prescribed.
5. Scalp Disorders
Scalp conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or sebaceous cysts may also cause scalp numbness. Patients may apply topical medications such as fusidic acid sodium ointment or mupirocin ointment under medical supervision.
In addition, brain tumors or other intracranial diseases may also lead to numbness above the ear. Early medical evaluation is essential, and proper diagnosis and treatment should be followed after completing appropriate examinations.
