What causes nipple enlargement before menstruation?
Enlargement of the nipples before menstruation may be caused by physiological factors or pathological factors, such as nipple allergy or intraductal papilloma of the breast.
I. Physiological Factors
Prior to the onset of menstruation, hormonal changes—particularly in estrogen and progesterone levels—can cause the nipples to enlarge. This may also be accompanied by mild discomfort or tenderness. These symptoms are generally considered normal physiological phenomena.
II. Pathological Factors
1. Nipple Allergy
Individuals with allergic constitutions may develop an allergic reaction upon exposure to allergens contacting the nipple area, leading to swelling, itching, and pain in the nipples.
2. Nipple Injury
If the nipple is subjected to pressure or trauma, it may become congested or swollen, often accompanied by pain and other discomforts.
In addition to the above, nipple enlargement could also result from conditions such as intraductal papilloma of the breast. It is recommended to wear properly fitting underwear in daily life.
