Introduction
Yawning causing pain inside the left ear may be due to factors such as changes in air pressure, excessive jaw movement, foreign body in the ear canal, otitis media, or temporomandibular joint disorder. In daily life, it is advisable to avoid wide mouth opening movements, maintain ear canal hygiene, and develop good chewing habits to reduce adverse effects on the ears and temporomandibular joint.

Generally, pain in the left ear when yawning may be caused by factors such as pressure changes, excessive movement, foreign bodies in the ear canal, otitis media, or temporomandibular joint disorder. Treatment under a doctor's guidance may include general management and medication. Specific analysis is as follows:

1. Pressure Changes

Yawning causes contraction of throat muscles, leading to fluctuations in air pressure. The middle ear cavity is connected to the throat via the Eustachian tube. If this tube is blocked or the pressure within the ear cannot adjust quickly enough, ear pain may occur. One can try pinching the nose and gently blowing air out to equalize pressure.

2. Excessive Movement

If the yawning motion is too wide, it may create unequal pressure inside and outside the ear, causing the eardrum to be compressed and resulting in pain in the left ear. It is advisable to avoid opening the mouth too widely during daily activities.

3. Foreign Body in the Ear Canal

A foreign body in the ear canal usually results from external objects accidentally entering the outer ear. During yawning, the opening of the Eustachian tube may push the object deeper into the ear, triggering the aforementioned symptoms. This condition may be accompanied by itching in the ear canal or tinnitus. Immediate medical attention is recommended, and a healthcare professional should safely remove the foreign object using specialized tools.

4. Otitis Media

Upper respiratory tract infections are the primary cause of otitis media. In cases of otitis media, pus accumulation and inflammatory reactions in the middle ear increase pressure on the eardrum. The opening of the Eustachian tube during yawning or swallowing further exacerbates this pressure, causing severe pain in the left ear. Symptoms may also include fever and hearing loss. Patients should follow medical advice and take medications such as cefuroxime axetil tablets, enteric-coated erythromycin tablets, or prednisolone acetate tablets.

5. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)

Poor chewing habits, tooth wear, trauma, and other factors may contribute to this condition. When yawning, movement of the temporomandibular joint may cause tension in surrounding muscles and ligaments, pulling on nerves near the ear and resulting in left-sided ear pain. This may be accompanied by difficulty chewing or facial muscle pain. As directed by a physician, treatment may include medications such as eperisone hydrochloride tablets, ibuprofen sustained-release capsules, or potassium diclofenac tablets.

In daily life, it is important to avoid extreme mouth-opening movements, maintain ear canal hygiene, and develop healthy chewing habits to reduce adverse effects on the ears and temporomandibular joints.
