Introduction
Squid contains relatively high levels of cholesterol, and excessive consumption may elevate blood cholesterol levels—particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol—increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Squid is also high in purines, which are metabolized into uric acid in the body. For individuals with gout, consuming excessive amounts of high-purine foods may raise uric acid levels, triggering gout attacks or worsening joint inflammation.

Generally, it is not recommended to eat squid due to possible risks such as allergies, gastrointestinal discomfort, indigestion, hypercholesterolemia, and gout. If any adverse reactions occur, prompt medical attention is advised. The specific reasons are analyzed as follows:

1. Allergy Risk

Squid is a deep-sea seafood product containing specific proteins and other components that may act as allergens in some individuals. People allergic to seafood may experience symptoms such as全身 itching or hives after consuming squid, and in severe cases, it could even be life-threatening.

2. Gastrointestinal Discomfort

Squid is considered a cold-natured and hard-to-digest food. For individuals with spleen and stomach deficiency-cold, eating squid may irritate the stomach and lead to gastrointestinal dysfunction, causing symptoms such as stomach upset and abdominal pain. Additionally, although squid is low in dietary fiber and rich in protein, digesting squid may cause gastric discomfort or bloating in some people.

3. Indigestion

Squid has dense muscle tissue rich in fibrous proteins that are difficult to break down, placing high demands on the digestive system. Individuals with poor digestion may experience indigestion, bloating, or stomach pain after consumption.

4. Hypercholesterolemia

Squid contains relatively high levels of cholesterol. Excessive consumption may elevate blood cholesterol levels, particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, thereby increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

5. Gout

Squid is high in purines, which are metabolized into uric acid in the body. For individuals with gout, consuming excessive amounts of high-purine foods like squid may raise uric acid levels, triggering gout attacks or worsening joint inflammation.

Despite these concerns, squid is a nutritious seafood rich in high-quality protein, vitamins, and minerals, and moderate consumption can benefit health. However, individuals with the aforementioned health conditions should limit or avoid eating squid to prevent exacerbation of their conditions.
