What Causes Gurgling Sounds in the Abdomen?
In daily life, many people frequently hear gurgling or rumbling sounds emanating from their abdomen—sounds that are often overlooked. Common causes of these abdominal gurgling noises include:
1. Gastrointestinal dysfunction: Imbalance of intestinal flora can lead to excessive bacterial fermentation within the gut, producing large amounts of gas. This may result in symptoms such as abdominal distension, belching, and audible bowel sounds (borborygmi). Such sounds may simply indicate hunger—or alternatively, they may stem from overeating or binge eating.
2. Chronic gastroenteritis: Gastritis can also cause gurgling abdominal sounds. Typical clinical manifestations of gastritis include upper abdominal pain, bloating, belching, and gastric mucosal bleeding.
3. Indigestion: Abdominal gurgling may be attributable to indigestion. When digestive function is impaired and gastric motility weakened, food remains stagnant in the stomach, undergoing abnormal fermentation and generating excess acid and gas—leading to bloating and audible gurgling.
4. Associated symptoms of various diseases, including disorders of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, peritoneum, intestinal gas accumulation (flatulence), and peptic ulcers.
5. Psychological stress and poor sleep: Excessive stress and inadequate rest can also contribute to these symptoms.
It is recommended to avoid consuming hard-to-digest foods—such as sweet potatoes, soybeans, and corn—in daily meals. Additionally, gentle abdominal massage may help promote gastrointestinal motility.
