Introduction
Whether a colonoscopy is painful mainly depends on the type of colonoscopy performed. To minimize discomfort, patients are advised to communicate fully with their doctor before the procedure, understand the process and relevant precautions, and adequately prepare the bowel under medical guidance. For patients who are particularly sensitive or concerned about pain, opting for a painless (sedated) colonoscopy may be considered.

Generally, whether or not the procedure is painful mainly depends on the type of colonoscopy being performed. With a conventional colonoscopy, patients may experience some discomfort; however, with a painless colonoscopy, pain is typically not felt. If any discomfort occurs, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly. The details are as follows:

During a conventional colonoscopy, the scope is inserted directly into the anus and advanced through the large intestine while the patient is awake, which can cause certain stimulation and friction to the intestinal tract. As a result, patients may experience abdominal bloating, anal discomfort, or mild pain.

A painless colonoscopy is performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation. Prior to the procedure, the doctor administers anesthetic medications to render the patient unconscious and free from pain. Therefore, during the examination, the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort. This approach is particularly suitable for patients who are sensitive to pain, feel anxious or nervous, or cannot tolerate a conventional colonoscopy.

Patients are advised to communicate fully with their doctor before the procedure to understand the process and related precautions, and to follow the doctor’s instructions for thorough bowel preparation.
