Introduction
1. Allergic factors: exposure to cosmetics, allergenic foods, or airborne dust and pollen. 2. Visual fatigue: often caused by prolonged screen time (e.g., internet use or television viewing), leading to excessive ocular strain and resulting in asthenopia (visual fatigue syndrome). 3. Angular blepharitis: a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the lateral canthal region of the eyelid margin.

Itchy eyelids are a very common symptom. In daily life, numerous factors can cause eyelid itching; often, people pay little attention to it and habitually rub their eyes with their hands—only to find the itching worsens. So, what exactly causes eyelid itching? Below is an explanation.

What Causes Eyelid Itching?

1. Allergic Factors

Among all patients experiencing ocular pruritus, approximately 80% suffer from allergy-induced eye itching. Exposure to cosmetics, allergenic foods, airborne dust, or pollen may trigger eyelid vesicles and papules, resulting in intense pruritus—and sometimes even a burning sensation. Eyelid swelling frequently accompanies these symptoms. In such cases, eyelid skin changes typically represent one manifestation of a systemic allergic reaction.

2. Visual Fatigue

Many young individuals with itchy eyes develop this symptom due to prolonged screen time—such as extended computer use or television viewing—which leads to excessive visual strain and subsequently triggers visual fatigue syndrome. This may exacerbate or precipitate conjunctivitis, causing persistent conjunctival injection, marked dryness, and pruritus. Therefore, in daily life, it is essential to identify and avoid potential triggers of ocular itching to alleviate associated discomfort.

3. Angular Blepharitis

Another cause of eyelid itching is angular blepharitis—a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the lateral canthal region of the eyelid margin. Unlike allergic causes, angular blepharitis results from infection with Moraxella lacunata (formerly known as Morax-Axenfeld bacillus). This bacterium produces proteolytic enzymes; because tear flow is relatively poor at the lateral canthus, the enzymes degrade proteins in the pericanthal skin and conjunctiva, leading to diffuse infiltration and ulceration.

The above outlines the primary causes of eyelid itching. We hope this information proves helpful.
