Introduction
1. Wind-cold common cold, which may also present with dizziness, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and fever; 2. Pharyngitis, accompanied by nausea, dry retching, gastric reflux, and halitosis; 3. Excess gastric acid: Individuals with hyperacidity often exhibit pronounced dampness internally, making them more prone to coughing with white phlegm; 4. Pulmonary diseases, such as tracheitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

In medicine, phlegm is defined as the mucus secreted by the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract below the nasal cavity—including the lungs and bronchi—primarily to expel foreign particles from the body. Specifically, it refers to mucus expectorated via coughing. So, what causes excessive production of white phlegm? Below is an explanation.

Causes of Excessive White Phlegm

1. Wind-Cold Invasion (Common Cold)

When the body is invaded by wind-cold pathogens, lung Qi becomes impaired and fails to disperse properly, resulting in frequent coughing. Additional symptoms may include sore throat, dizziness, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and fever. The cough typically produces abundant, thin, white phlegm. Management should focus on dispelling cold and suppressing cough. Warm foods may be beneficial, but cold beverages and spicy or irritating foods must be avoided.

2. Pharyngitis

Individuals with pharyngitis often experience throat discomfort and difficulty expectorating thick, white phlegm. Additional manifestations may include nausea, dry heaving, gastroesophageal reflux, and halitosis. Pharyngitis is commonly caused by bacterial infection and can be either acute or chronic. Effective management of excessive phlegm in such cases requires prompt and appropriate treatment of the underlying pharyngitis.

3. Excessive Gastric Acid Secretion

Excess gastric acid secretion is often associated with internal dampness and heat accumulation, particularly during dry seasons, leading to cough with copious white phlegm. For phlegm overproduction secondary to hyperacidity, herbal remedies that nourish and protect the stomach may be helpful. Additionally, increasing fluid intake, consuming more fresh vegetables and fruits, and maintaining adequate indoor humidity are recommended.

4. Pulmonary Disorders

Excessive white phlegm frequently indicates lower respiratory tract disease—such as tracheal, bronchial, or pulmonary disorders—that stimulate increased mucus secretion. Clinically, this is commonly observed in acute or chronic bronchitis, especially when caused by viral or mycoplasmal infections. Similarly, viral pneumonia and mycoplasma pneumonia often present predominantly with white phlegm.
