What Causes Scant Menstrual Flow?
Causes of scanty menstruation (hypomenorrhea):
1. Irregular lifestyle—frequent staying up late, binge eating, or erratic eating habits may all lead to reduced menstrual flow. Additionally, chronic emotional suppression or excessive emotional agitation can disrupt endocrine function, resulting in decreased menstrual volume.
2. Medication-induced causes—certain drugs, such as oral contraceptives or antineoplastic agents, may cause hypomenorrhea. Therefore, these medications should be avoided whenever possible.
3. Other pathological factors—including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hyperprolactinemia, and endometrial tuberculosis. In PCOS, abnormally low estrogen levels impair endometrial proliferation, leading to a thin endometrium and consequently reduced menstrual flow. Hyperprolactinemia is a syndrome characterized by elevated prolactin levels, amenorrhea, galactorrhea, anovulation, and infertility, triggered by internal or external environmental factors. Endometrial tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection of the female genital tract, can also result in hypomenorrhea.
