What are the methods for self-massage of the prostate?
Generally, methods of self-prostate massage include the knee-chest position massage, lateral decubitus position massage, supine position massage, warm water sitz bath combined with massage, and anal lift exercises with auxiliary massage. The details are as follows:
1. Knee-Chest Position Massage
Adopt the knee-chest position, with both knees and elbows touching the ground and the chest close to the bed surface while lifting the buttocks. Wear a glove on the right index finger and apply lubricant, then gently and slowly insert it into the anus. The prostate can be felt on the anterior wall of the rectum approximately 4-6 cm from the anus. Once the prostate is located, begin massaging gently from the outer upper side toward the inner lower side of both lateral lobes, applying pressure until a mild sensation of soreness and distension is felt; perform 3-5 massages on each side. Then massage the median groove 2-3 times from top to bottom. The movements should be slow and gentle. Throughout the process, pay attention to personal sensations and avoid excessive force.
2. Lateral Decubitus Position Massage
Lie on the left side with the left leg straightened and the right leg bent at the knee, drawing as close to the abdomen as possible. After wearing a glove and applying lubricant to the right index finger, insert the finger into the anus. Once the prostate is reached, perform the massage using the same technique as in the knee-chest position: first massaging the lateral lobes, then the median groove.
3. Supine Position Massage
Prepare a suitable prostate massager and apply sufficient lubricant. Lie flat on the bed with legs slightly apart. Slowly insert the massager into the anus. Once it reaches the location of the prostate, activate the appropriate function of the massager and follow the instructions for use, generally not exceeding 5 minutes per session. After use, thoroughly clean the massager to prevent bacterial growth.
4. Warm Water Sitz Bath Combined with Massage
Prepare a basin of warm water at a suitable temperature, with sufficient volume to immerse the perineal area. Have gloves and lubricant ready. Begin with a warm water sitz bath lasting approximately 10-15 minutes to relax the muscles of the perineal area and around the anus. After the bath, dry the area and insert the finger using either the knee-chest or lateral decubitus position to perform prostate massage. The specific massage technique should follow the method described for the corresponding posture mentioned earlier. A warm water sitz bath can promote local blood circulation, and when combined with massage, it can more effectively relieve tension in the prostate.
5. Anal Lift Exercises with Auxiliary Massage
Stand or lie flat on the bed and begin with anal lift exercises by consciously contracting the anal sphincter muscle, as if trying to hold back a bowel movement. Maintain the contraction for 3-5 seconds, then relax. Repeat this 10-15 times as one set, performing 3-5 sets in total. During breaks or after completing a set, simple massage techniques can be used, such as gently pressing the perineal area with the index finger for 3-5 seconds each time, repeating 5-10 times. Anal lift exercises help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, and when combined with simple compression massage of the perineal area, they can indirectly provide some health benefits to the prostate.
Note: Self-prostate massage is not suitable for patients with acute prostatitis, prostate tuberculosis, or other conditions, to avoid adverse consequences such as the spread of inflammation. If pain, hematuria, or other abnormalities occur during the massage, stop immediately and seek medical attention.
