Can I eat zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings) when I have a cough?
Generally, if the cough is mild and the digestive system is functioning normally, it is usually fine to eat rice dumplings (zongzi), but it is important to consume them in moderation. However, if the cough is severe and accompanied by poor digestion, eating rice dumplings is typically not recommended.

If the cough is caused by a mild cold or throat inflammation, and the main ingredients of the rice dumpling are glutinous rice and other healthy components without excessive sugar or greasy seasonings, moderate consumption of rice dumplings generally does not negatively affect the cough. The glutinous rice in the dumplings can provide energy and aid in physical recovery. Certain types of rice dumplings, such as those wrapped in bamboo leaves, have properties that help clear heat and reduce internal fire, and moderate consumption may aid in recovery.
If the patient experiences coughing accompanied by phlegm production, the condition is relatively more severe, and eating rice dumplings is not advisable at this time. Rice dumplings are primarily made from glutinous rice, which is sticky and may cause phlegm to become more difficult to expel after consumption, thereby affecting breathing. Rice dumplings are also difficult to digest; even if they can be consumed, the quantity should be controlled to avoid indigestion.
During a coughing episode, patients should maintain a light diet, consume more fresh fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, and avoid spicy, irritating foods, as well as overly salty or sweet items.
