Introduction
1. Drink milk: Capsaicin, the compound responsible for spiciness, is fat-soluble; therefore, milk can help alleviate the burning sensation. 2. Consume acidic foods—such as plum juice, lemon, lime, or tomato juice—which may help relieve gastric discomfort caused by excessive spiciness. 3. Drink warm water to help cleanse the gastrointestinal tract. 4. Drink beer: Capsaicin is not only fat-soluble but also alcohol-soluble.

Gastric pain caused by consuming chili peppers is primarily due to direct irritation and damage to the gastrointestinal mucosa by capsaicin, resulting in mucosal hyperemia, edema, and erosion; in some cases, acute gastric ulcers may develop. So, how can one alleviate stomach pain after eating spicy food? Below are several effective strategies.

How to Alleviate Stomach Pain After Eating Chili Peppers

1. Drink Milk

Abdominal pain following chili consumption mainly results from capsaicin-induced gastric irritation. Since capsaicin is not water-soluble but dissolves readily in lipids, milk can help alleviate this discomfort. Upon entering the stomach, milk dissolves capsaicin, effectively forming a protective barrier between capsaicin and the gastric mucosa. In addition to its lipid content, modern research indicates that casein—a protein found in milk—also possesses capsaicin-neutralizing properties.

2. Consume Acidic Foods

After overconsumption of spicy foods, gastric pain may be relieved by ingesting acidic foods such as plum juice, lemon, lime, or tomato juice. These acidic substances neutralize alkaline capsaicin, thereby reducing its solubility and concentration within the gastrointestinal tract—naturally alleviating both spiciness and associated abdominal discomfort.

3. Drink Warm Water

If excessive spiciness causes gastric pain, drinking ample warm water promptly helps flush and cleanse the gastrointestinal tract. Avoid extremely hot or cold water, as either may exacerbate gastric discomfort. Adding a small amount of salt to warm water may further aid in relieving gastric pain.

4. Drink Beer (with Caution)

Capsaicin is also soluble in alcohol. Thus, while water may fail to relieve spiciness, beer often provides rapid relief—primarily because capsaicin dissolves in ethanol. However, when experiencing severe gastric pain, beer is generally not recommended for alleviating spiciness, as alcohol itself irritates the gastrointestinal mucosa. Instead, diluted vinegar may serve as a safer alternative for neutralizing capsaicin.
