What should I do if I develop lumps on my head?
When lumps appear on the scalp, the first step is to determine their underlying cause. Common causes include allergic reactions and infections—such as folliculitis or furuncles (boils). In daily clinical practice, infection-related conditions like folliculitis and furuncles are relatively common. Therefore, patients who develop scalp lumps should seek prompt in-person medical evaluation at a hospital.

We must first identify the exact cause. If the lump results from an infection such as folliculitis or a furuncle, topical disinfection with iodophor followed by application of anti-infective agents—such as mupirocin ointment (Bactroban®) or fusidic acid cream—is recommended.

However, if the lump is allergy-related, antiallergic treatment is required—for example, oral antihistamines such as cetirizine or loratadine, along with topical corticosteroid ointments or calamine lotion for symptomatic relief.
