Introduction
A woman has a higher chance of becoming pregnant if she engages in sexual intercourse during her ovulation period. Women with regular menstrual cycles ovulate once per month; therefore, accurately timing intercourse around ovulation is essential for successful conception. Typically, sperm survive in the female reproductive tract for 1–3 days. The optimal window for conception is within 24–48 hours after ovulation, when the likelihood of pregnancy is greatest.

Childbearing—the process of conceiving and raising children—is one of humanity’s most fundamental biological needs. Yet, in reality, many young couples today face the frustrating challenge of trying unsuccessfully to conceive for extended periods, while others may become pregnant unexpectedly with little or no planning. So, when is a woman most likely to get pregnant? Below, we provide answers to this question.

When Is a Woman Most Likely to Get Pregnant?

A woman’s chance of conception is highest during her ovulation period. In women with regular menstrual cycles, ovulation occurs once per month; therefore, accurately identifying the timing of ovulation significantly increases the likelihood of successful conception. Sperm typically survive for 1–3 days after entering the female reproductive tract, and the optimal window for conception is within 24–48 hours following ovulation—when the probability of fertilization is greatest. In normally fertile women, menstruation occurs approximately once per month. A menstrual cycle is defined as the interval from the first day of one menstrual period to the first day of the next. Ovulation generally occurs about 14 days before the onset of the next menstrual period. For safety and practicality, the “fertile window” (or ovulation period) is commonly defined as the 10-day interval comprising the 5 days preceding ovulation, the day of ovulation itself, and the 4 days following it.

Additional Information: Signs and Symptoms of Ovulation

1. Increased Libido

The “fertile window”—i.e., the ovulation period—is often associated with heightened sexual desire. Since the likelihood of conception is substantially higher during this time compared to other phases of the cycle, women actively trying to conceive may notice particularly pronounced increases in libido during ovulation.

2. Increased Cervical Mucus

An increase in vaginal discharge (cervical mucus) during the fertile window is a normal physiological phenomenon. Outside of ovulation, cervical mucus tends to be scant, thick, and opaque. During ovulation, however, mucus production markedly increases and becomes clear, watery, and highly elastic—resembling raw egg whites. Some women report a sensation of vaginal wetness or slipperiness, and may observe stretchy, stringy mucus when wiping with toilet paper.
