Introduction
Dizziness during menstruation is a symptom of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It commonly results from blood loss during menstruation—particularly in women who experience heavy menstrual bleeding—leading to deficiency of qi and blood. This deficiency impairs adequate cerebral blood supply, thereby causing neurological dysfunction, including dizziness, blurred vision, and generalized fatigue. Therefore, experiencing dizziness during menstruation generally does not warrant excessive concern.

During menstruation, most women experience fatigue and increased sensitivity to cold. Some women may even develop dizziness during their period. So, what causes dizziness during menstruation? Below is an explanation.

What Causes Dizziness During Menstruation?

Dizziness during menstruation falls under the category of premenstrual or menstrual syndrome symptoms. It commonly results from blood loss during the menstrual period—particularly in cases where excessive bleeding occurs—leading to deficiency of qi and blood. This deficiency impairs adequate cerebral perfusion, thereby causing neurological symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, and generalized fatigue. Therefore, experiencing dizziness during menstruation generally does not warrant excessive concern. If dizziness occurs exclusively during menstruation and improves with appropriate rest, dietary adjustments, and warmth maintenance, symptom monitoring and flexible self-management are usually sufficient. However, if a woman frequently experiences dizziness during her period—especially when accompanied by nausea and headache—a comprehensive physical examination is recommended to identify underlying causes and guide appropriate treatment.

Additional Information: Early Signs of Menstruation

1. Emotional Instability

Several days—or even up to one week—before menstruation begins, some women experience emotional fluctuations, such as unexplained irritability or crying spells, or disproportionate anger over minor issues. Many also report generalized fatigue and excessive sleepiness. These manifestations often signal the imminent onset of menstruation. Additionally, headaches may occur prior to menstruation, but typically without any underlying organic disease.

2. Breast Tenderness

Following ovulation, rising estrogen and progesterone levels stimulate physiological breast tissue proliferation, including growth of mammary ducts and lobules—resulting in breast tenderness for some women. Nipple soreness may also occur. Wearing overly tight undergarments should be avoided to prevent exacerbating discomfort. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Spleen governs digestion and absorption, while the Kidney regulates the opening and closing of the gastrointestinal tract and controls urination and defecation. During menstruation, Spleen- and Kidney-qi become relatively weaker, potentially leading to diarrhea.
