Introduction
Mild abdominal bloating after conception is a normal physiological phenomenon. As the fetus grows, the uterus progressively enlarges, pushing the stomach upward and compressing the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This compression slows GI motility, leading to gas accumulation. Additionally, elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone cause relaxation of GI smooth muscle, further reducing motility and contributing to bloating.

Pregnancy is not only a joyful experience for women but also an exceptionally demanding process. Many women experience varying degrees of discomfort during pregnancy, with nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite being the most common symptoms in early pregnancy. Some pregnant women may also feel abdominal bloating. So, what causes abdominal bloating during pregnancy? Below, we provide answers to this question.

What Causes Abdominal Bloating During Pregnancy?

Mild abdominal bloating after conception is normal. As the fetus grows, the uterus gradually enlarges, pushing the stomach upward and compressing the gastrointestinal tract. This compression slows intestinal motility, leading to gas accumulation. Additionally, elevated estrogen and progesterone levels cause relaxation of gastrointestinal smooth muscle, further reducing motility and contributing to bloating. To alleviate this, adjust your diet by adopting a “small, frequent meals” approach—avoid overeating in one sitting—and drink plenty of water daily while consuming ample fresh fruits and vegetables. Engaging in gentle, appropriate physical activity—such as walking or prenatal yoga—can also effectively relieve bloating.

Knowledge Extension: How to Prevent Abdominal Bloating During Pregnancy

1. Avoid foods that readily produce gas during pregnancy, such as legumes, fried foods, carbonated beverages, glutinous rice, and instant noodles. Also, minimize intake of sweets and refined foods. Most sugary foods are acidic and may trigger excess gastric acid secretion, whereas refined foods lack dietary fiber and can exacerbate constipation.

2. Avoid consuming coix seed (Job’s tears) during pregnancy, as it has diuretic properties. Unless specifically indicated for edema management, coix seed is generally not recommended for pregnant women. Moreover, pregnant women should never self-administer laxatives. In cases of severe constipation, consult a healthcare provider for prescription of safe, lubricating suppositories. Self-medication with laxatives must be avoided, as it may stimulate uterine contractions and increase the risk of miscarriage or preterm labor.
