Introduction
1. Cherry angioma: A cherry angioma is a benign, bright-red, dome-shaped vascular lesion. It typically blanches upon pressure and rapidly regains its color once pressure is released. 2. Purpura: Purpura may result from capillary bleeding and can be associated with factors such as mechanical stress or vasculitic inflammation. 3. Allergic reaction: Skin allergies—either congenital or acquired—may occur upon exposure to allergens such as shellfish or other triggers, leading to characteristic allergic manifestations.

When small red spots appear on the body, many people seek to identify the underlying cause—because only by understanding the cause can appropriate, targeted treatment be administered. So, what causes these small red spots? Below, we provide answers.

What Causes Small Red Spots on the Body?

1. Cherry Angiomas (Red Moles)

Cherry angiomas—also known as senile angiomas—are benign proliferations of capillaries. Their hallmark feature is blanching upon pressure, with rapid return of color upon release. They appear as bright red spots that may be flat or slightly raised above the skin surface. Typically, they range in size from pinhead- to millet-grain-sized, though occasionally they may grow as large as a peanut. As a benign vascular condition, cherry angiomas generally require no treatment. However, if they affect cosmetic appearance, they can be removed via physical methods such as laser therapy.

2. Purpura

Purpura results from capillary bleeding and may be associated with factors such as mechanical pressure or vasculitic inflammation. Clinically, it appears as pinpoint hemorrhagic lesions—bright red in color—and does not blanch with pressure. Over time, as hemosiderin is gradually absorbed, the lesions turn yellowish before fading completely. In summary, individuals can perform a simple self-assessment: observe whether the spot blanches under pressure and whether it persists without resolution. If uncertainty remains, consultation with a dermatologist is recommended for professional evaluation and diagnosis.

3. Allergic Reactions

Many individuals experience either congenital or acquired skin allergies. Exposure to certain allergens—such as shellfish or other triggers—can provoke allergic reactions. Some people develop dense clusters of small red spots across the face after applying skincare products, indicating an allergic response. In such cases, discontinuing the offending product or eliminating the allergen usually suffices. Importantly, if no obvious allergic trigger is identified, the condition should not be overlooked.

The above outlines common causes of small red spots appearing on the body. We hope this information proves helpful.
