Introduction
1. Menstrual irregularities, such as impaired menstrual blood flow, may cause abdominal pain, increased menstrual volume, and prolonged menstruation. 2. Unintended pregnancy—though this possibility is relatively low. 3. Gynecological disorders: The condition may involve the entire endometrium, fallopian tubes, and pelvic organs, predisposing women to various gynecological diseases. 4. Infertility: It may lead to endometriosis, thereby causing infertility.

Menstruation is a natural physiological process that occurs monthly in women. Almost everyone knows that sexual intercourse should be avoided during menstruation. However, some young people often cross this boundary and engage in intercourse during their period. So what happens if intercourse occurs during menstruation? Below, we address this question.

What Happens If Intercourse Occurs During Menstruation?

1. Menstrual Irregularities

During menstruation, the cervix is slightly open. Sexual activity can interfere with the normal menstrual flow, leading to impaired expulsion of menstrual blood and resulting in abdominal pain. Additionally, sexual arousal causes genital congestion in women, which may increase menstrual flow and prolong the duration of menstruation.

2. Unintended Pregnancy

Although conception is generally unlikely during menstruation—based on typical ovulation timing—individual ovulation patterns vary. Ovulation may occur earlier or later than expected due to various factors, and in some cases, it may even overlap partially with menstruation. Thus, while the risk is low, pregnancy remains possible during menstruation.

3. Gynecological Infections

During intercourse, bacteria from the male penis may be introduced into the female vagina. Menstrual blood serves as an excellent medium for bacterial growth, facilitating rapid bacterial proliferation. More seriously, bacteria may spread via microscopic wounds or small ruptured blood vessels in the shedding endometrium, potentially causing infection that affects the entire endometrium, fallopian tubes, and pelvic organs—leading to various gynecological diseases.

4. Infertility

Normally, the endometrium sheds and exits the body with menstrual blood. However, if intercourse occurs immediately after menstruation ends, uterine contractions triggered by female sexual arousal may force detached endometrial fragments into the fallopian tubes. These fragments may then travel into the abdominal or pelvic cavity and implant wherever they land, resulting in endometriosis—a condition that can lead to infertility.
