What eye drops should be used for a stye?
Commonly used eye drops for hordeolum include antibiotic eye drops, anti-inflammatory eye drops, mydriatic eye drops, artificial tears, and heat-clearing detoxifying eye drops. The choice should be based on the type of infection and severity of symptoms, and must be used according to medical advice. If symptoms do not improve after 3 days of medication, or if redness and swelling worsen or vision is affected, prompt medical attention is recommended.
1. Antibiotic Eye Drops: Such as levofloxacin eye drops or tobramycin eye drops. These directly inhibit bacterial growth in the eye and are the cornerstone of treatment for bacterial hordeolum. They should be used for the full prescribed course to avoid premature discontinuation, which may lead to recurrent infection.
2. Anti-inflammatory Eye Drops: Such as diclofenac sodium eye drops or pranoprofen eye drops. These help relieve inflammatory symptoms caused by hordeolum, such as redness, swelling, and pain. They are suitable for cases with significant pain or a higher risk of inflammation spreading.

3. Mydriatic Eye Drops: Such as tropicamide eye drops. By relaxing the ciliary muscle and dilating the pupil, they reduce spasmodic eye pain and help alleviate discomfort associated with hordeolum, such as eye pressure and photophobia. Frequency of use should be controlled under medical supervision.
4. Artificial Tears: Such as sodium hyaluronate eye drops or polyethylene glycol eye drops. These moisturize the ocular surface and help flush out residual bacteria or secretions, reducing dryness. They can be used alongside antibiotic eye drops to minimize irritation from the medication.
5. Heat-Clearing Detoxifying Eye Drops: Such as Houttuynia cordata (fish mint) eye drops or bear bile eye drops. These have effects of clearing heat, purging fire, and detoxifying, and are suitable for mild hordeolum or as adjunctive therapy to relieve symptoms like redness, swelling, and burning sensation. Their use should be tailored according to individual constitution.
Before using any eye drops, wash hands thoroughly to avoid contaminating the solution. Keep the dropper bottle tip away from the eye during application, and use the drops regularly as directed. Avoid rubbing the eyes, prolonged eye strain, and maintain good ocular hygiene during treatment. Follow a light diet and avoid spicy or irritating foods.
