Can I have sexual intercourse on the day of cervical cancer screening?
Sexual intercourse is not permitted on the day of cervical cancer screening. Cervical cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy and a prevalent gynecologic condition, posing significant threats to women’s health and life; thus, cervical cancer screening is especially critical.
Generally, the timing for resuming sexual intercourse after cervical cancer screening depends on the screening results. If the cervix appears smooth post-screening, the Pap smear shows no bleeding, vaginal discharge is minimal and odorless, intercourse may typically resume after three days.
Cervical cancer screening primarily involves two tests: the ThinPrep Cytology Test (TCT) and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing. These tests help detect cervical cellular abnormalities and HPV infection. Additionally, patients should maintain good personal hygiene, keep the external genitalia clean to prevent pathogen invasion, engage in appropriate physical exercise, ensure adequate nutrition, and strengthen overall immunity. Regular follow-up examinations are also recommended to facilitate better prevention and management.
Sexually active women should undergo routine cervical cancer screening. If symptoms such as postcoital bleeding occur, prompt screening is advised. If both TCT and HPV test results remain negative for three consecutive years, screening intervals may be extended to every four to five years. Therefore, maintaining good personal hygiene and keeping the external genitalia clean to prevent pathogen entry remains essential.
