Introduction
1. For “excessive internal heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept), treatment with heat-clearing and detoxifying medications is recommended; additionally, increasing daily water intake is advised. 2. For skin allergies, oral antihistamines may be used, and consumption of foods known to trigger allergic skin reactions should be minimized. 3. For cheilitis, supplementation with vitamins C and B, as well as trace elements such as iron and zinc, is essential. 4. For perioral eczema, topical corticosteroid ointments—such as fluocinonide—may be applied.

Itchy lips are a relatively common symptom. This condition warrants attention, and individuals experiencing it should seek evaluation at a reputable dermatology hospital. Topical medications may be used for treatment. But what causes itchy lips? The following section addresses this question.

What Causes Itchy Lips?

1. Internal Heat Accumulation (“Fire” in Traditional Chinese Medicine)

Itchy lips may result from internal heat accumulation. Treatment may involve heat-clearing and detoxifying herbal remedies, such as Yin Qiao San, Long Dan Xie Gan Tang, Liu Shen Wan, or Niuhuang Jiedu Pian. During treatment, avoid spicy and irritating foods; instead, opt for bland, mild meals. Drink plenty of water to maintain adequate hydration.

2. Skin Allergy

Avoid spicy and irritating foods, and limit consumption of seafood, which commonly triggers allergic skin reactions. If itching is allergy-related, oral antihistamines may be prescribed. Pay special attention to dietary adjustments—minimize intake of known allergenic foods.

3. Cheilitis

Cheilitis often arises from environmental dryness, deficiencies in vitamins and trace elements (e.g., vitamin B, vitamin C, iron, zinc), nutritional imbalances, or habitual lip-biting or lip-licking. Primary symptoms include dryness, scaling, bleeding, and erosion of the lips. Treatment begins with supplementation of vitamins C and B, as well as iron and zinc. Locally, emollient lip balms may be applied; severe cases require physician-guided topical therapy.

4. Perioral Dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis—often triggered by allergies—may present as itchy lips. Topical corticosteroid ointments (e.g., Fluocinonide) may be used under medical supervision. Maintain good personal hygiene, adopt a balanced diet, observe dietary restrictions, and increase intake of fresh vegetables and fruits to support recovery. Prioritize high-fiber foods to promote toxin elimination.
