How is chickenpox transmitted?

Chickenpox is primarily transmitted via respiratory droplets and direct contact with the fluid from a patient’s vesicles. It is a highly contagious disease to which the general population is susceptible; over 90% of susceptible individuals will develop the disease after exposure to a chickenpox patient.

Therefore, avoid contact with chickenpox patients whenever possible. Vaccination is the most effective preventive measure; chickenpox vaccines are available at local community health centers or centers for disease control and prevention.During peak chickenpox seasons, minimize visits to crowded or poorly ventilated places. If someone in your household has chickenpox, strict isolation measures should be implemented to prevent transmission. If unavoidable contact with a chickenpox patient occurs, administration of varicella zoster immune globulin (VZIG) may be considered.
