Introduction
A dry cough is a cough that produces no phlegm or mucus. There are many possible causes of dry cough in infants, including environmental factors—such as dust or irritating odors—which can easily trigger it. Medical conditions—including allergic rhinitis, asthma, and pneumonia—can also commonly cause dry cough. When an infant develops a dry cough, ensure they drink plenty of fluids and maintain regular indoor ventilation.

Coughing is not a disease itself, but rather a protective, reflexive bodily response that helps expel pathological secretions or foreign substances from the airways. However, if an infant experiences prolonged or recurrent coughing, identifying the underlying cause is crucial. So, what causes dry cough in infants? Below, we address this question.

What Causes Dry Cough in Infants?

Dry cough refers to coughing without phlegm production. There are numerous potential causes of dry cough in infants. Environmental factors—such as dust or irritating odors—can readily trigger dry cough. Certain medical conditions—including allergic rhinitis, asthma, and pneumonia—may also lead to dry cough. When an infant develops a dry cough, ensure they drink plenty of fluids and maintain regular indoor ventilation. If the cough persists for an extended period, consider taking your baby to a hospital for evaluation, including allergy testing. If the dry cough occurs frequently or is accompanied by fever, yellowish purulent nasal discharge, or interferes with feeding or sleep, upper respiratory tract infection or tracheitis should be suspected. Prompt medical consultation is advised, along with blood tests and other diagnostic evaluations to determine the precise cause and guide appropriate management.

Knowledge Extension: How to Prevent Dry Cough in Infants

1. Maintain Appropriate Warmth

Keep indoor temperature between 25–28°C, which is generally most comfortable for infants. Note: Avoid over-bundling your baby—whether indoors or outdoors—as excessive wrapping may impair thermoregulation and weaken immune function.

2. Optimize Indoor Humidity

Excessively dry indoor air can dehydrate the infant’s respiratory mucosa, potentially causing microvascular rupture and bleeding, and impairing ciliary motility—thereby predisposing to dry cough. During dry weather, increase ambient humidity using humidifiers, lightly misting floors with water, or regularly mopping with a damp mop.
