Causes of Vulvar Itching During Pregnancy
Pruritus vulvae (vulvar itching) occurs more frequently during pregnancy, primarily due to elevated estrogen levels and pelvic hyperemia, which lead to increased cervical and vaginal secretions and heightened vaginal discharge (leukorrhea). This excess discharge, in turn, stimulates increased secretion from the sweat and sebaceous glands of the vulva. Local moisture and inadequate hygiene further predispose women to vulvar itching.
Elevated estrogen levels during pregnancy also increase glycogen content in vaginal epithelial cells, disrupting the local pH balance and creating a favorable environment for Candida (yeast) overgrowth—another common cause of vulvar itching in pregnancy. Pregnant women experiencing vulvar itching should seek prompt medical evaluation; when indicated, vaginal secretion testing should be performed and appropriate treatment initiated without delay.
