Introduction
1. Hunger: When a person feels hungry, gastrointestinal motility begins. 2. Eating habits: Eating too quickly causes air to enter the mouth along with food; consuming large amounts of starchy and protein-rich foods. 3. Indigestion: Gastrointestinal motility slows down. 4. Diarrhea: Caused by ingestion of contaminated or unhygienic food.

When we feel hungry, our stomachs often make gurgling noises—a sound most people are familiar with. However, hunger is not the only cause of such sounds. Gurgling or rumbling noises can also occur during normal gastrointestinal motility. So, what causes persistent stomach rumbling? Below, we address this question.

Causes of Persistent Stomach Rumbling

1. Hunger

This is a common phenomenon: when hunger sets in, the brain signals the gastrointestinal tract to secrete digestive juices, triggering peristalsis. If the stomach and intestines contain little or no food, the movement of water and gas together produces audible gurgling sounds.

2. Dietary Habits

Eating too quickly may cause air to enter the mouth along with food. Poor eating habits—such as swallowing excessive air while eating—can lead to increased stomach gurgling and flatulence. Additionally, consuming large amounts of starchy or protein-rich foods—or certain irritating foods—can promote excess gas production in the body.

3. Indigestion

When digestive function declines, gastrointestinal motility slows down, potentially leaving the stomach and intestines relatively empty. Prolonged food retention in the GI tract allows fermentation to occur, producing acidic secretions and gas—resulting in audible abdominal sounds and bloating.

4. Diarrhea-Related Factors

Consuming contaminated or highly irritating foods may cause gastrointestinal discomfort and pronounced gurgling. When gastrointestinal function is impaired, excessive gas accumulates in the gut; the combined movement of gas and intestinal fluids generates characteristic gurgling sounds.
