What causes excessive vaginal discharge?
The main causes of increased vaginal discharge in women include the following:
1. Sexual arousal: During sexual activity—particularly at orgasm—both women and men experience heightened excitement, which can naturally lead to increased vaginal discharge.
2. Ovulation: Vaginal discharge typically increases during ovulation. At this time, discharge is usually more abundant than usual and becomes thin and transparent—a completely normal physiological phenomenon requiring no concern.
3. Elevated progesterone levels: Many women notice increased vaginal discharge after becoming pregnant. As long as the increase is mild and no other abnormalities are present, this is considered a normal physiological response.
4. Excessive stress: High stress levels may disrupt autonomic nervous system function, leading to endocrine imbalance and consequently increased vaginal discharge. Women should therefore actively manage their emotions and practice relaxation techniques.
5. Trichomoniasis (trichomonial vaginitis): This infection causes not only increased vaginal discharge but also a foul odor.
6. Gynecological disorders: Conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical erosion, and various forms of vaginitis can all result in increased vaginal discharge.
