Introduction
In general, the more common side effects of irbesartan include dizziness, vertigo, palpitations, and occasional cough. These are typically mild, and most patients can continue treatment and tolerate them well. Hypersensitivity reactions may also occur, manifesting as pruritus, erythema, rash, or urticaria-like skin changes. In rare, severe cases, angioedema may develop.

Irbesartan is a medication specifically indicated for the treatment of hypertension. It effectively controls patients’ blood pressure and helps prevent excessive fluctuations. However, like all medications, irbesartan may cause side effects after administration—and these side effects can vary significantly among individuals. The most commonly reported adverse effects include renal impairment and hepatic dysfunction. So, what are the specific side effects associated with irbesartan? Below, we address this question in detail.

Side Effects of Irbesartan

In general, the more common side effects of irbesartan include dizziness, vertigo, palpitations, and occasional coughing—typically mild in nature. Most patients can continue treatment without discontinuation, as these symptoms are usually well tolerated. Hypersensitivity reactions may also occur, manifesting as pruritus, skin redness, rash, or urticaria-like eruptions. In rare but severe cases, angioedema may develop. Gastrointestinal symptoms—including dyspepsia, heartburn, acid reflux, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloating—may also arise. Additionally, patients may experience musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, or upper respiratory tract infections. Less frequently, irbesartan may trigger anxiety, nervousness, chest pain, pharyngitis, or tachycardia. It may also cause hypotension—including orthostatic hypotension. Irbesartan is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug, as well as in pregnant and breastfeeding women, to avoid potential harm to maternal or fetal health.

Knowledge Expansion: Therapeutic Benefits of Irbesartan

1. Antihypertensive Effect

Irbesartan tablets belong to the class of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). They exert their antihypertensive effect by inhibiting vasoconstriction and aldosterone release. Since hypertension is a chronic condition requiring long-term pharmacotherapy—and is not curable—patients must adhere strictly to their physician’s instructions and maintain continuous treatment; self-discontinuation is strongly discouraged, as poor blood pressure control increases the risk of serious complications such as intracerebral hemorrhage. For hypertensive patients with concomitant obesity, regular physical activity and weight management are also recommended to support optimal blood pressure control.

2. Thrombosis Prevention

In patients with hypertension secondary to diabetes or chronic kidney disease, irbesartan helps mitigate renal damage by reducing glomerular filtration of protein and thereby decreasing proteinuria. Moreover, it is used in the management of heart failure, prevention of left ventricular remodeling, and delay of heart failure progression. Additionally, irbesartan contributes to stroke prevention and supports maintenance of sinus rhythm following cardioversion in patients with atrial fibrillation.

The above outlines the key side effects associated with irbesartan. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
