Introduction
Coughing in children can irritate the throat and potentially trigger vomiting; therefore, antitussive treatment should be initiated first. During the coughing episode, ensure the child gets adequate rest and drinks plenty of plain water. Coughs caused by common colds typically improve within 5–7 days. However, if the cough results from a pulmonary or respiratory tract infection, pharmacological treatment—under a physician’s guidance—is required.

Coughing is a very common condition; however, recovery from coughing tends to be slow. Persistent coughing not only causes physical discomfort but also significantly disrupts daily life. In children, severe coughing may even trigger vomiting, making it difficult both to administer medication and to maintain adequate nutrition—thereby substantially hindering recovery. So, why do children vomit when they cough? Below, we address this question.

Why do children vomit when they cough?

Coughing can irritate the pharyngeal region, potentially triggering the vomiting reflex. Therefore, initial management should focus on suppressing the cough. During episodes of coughing, ensure the child gets ample rest and drinks plenty of plain water. Coughs caused by common colds typically improve within 5–7 days. However, if the cough stems from pulmonary or respiratory tract infection, pharmacological treatment under medical supervision is necessary. Mild infections may be managed with anti-inflammatory medications. For coughs accompanied by sputum production, traditional Chinese patent medicines with heat-clearing, detoxifying, expectorant, and antitussive properties—such as Xiao Kui Hua Pediatric Lung-Heat Cough and Wheezing Oral Liquid (commonly prescribed by pediatric hospitals)—may be considered.

Knowledge Extension: How to Relieve Cough in Children

1. Acupressure for Cough Relief

Hand-based acupressure techniques for relieving childhood cough are simple to perform. First, parents should gently massage the Fei Shu (BL13) acupoint located on the child’s back for five minutes. Next, gently push the child’s scapulae outward bilaterally—one hundred times. Finally, use the thumb to apply gentle, rhythmic pressure (point stimulation) on the Tian Tu (CV22) acupoint for fifty repetitions. Additionally, gently patting the child’s back during coughing episodes can also help alleviate cough symptoms.

2. Dietary Remedies for Cough Relief

Numerous dietary therapies can help alleviate coughing and excessive phlegm. A commonly used remedy is the “Water Chestnut and Walnut Cough-Relieving Formula.” For children suffering from whooping cough, consuming water chestnuts together with walnuts may help suppress coughing. When a child experiences persistent coughing, parents may prepare a decoction of pear with an appropriate amount of white sugar—this beverage offers excellent lung-moistening, heat-clearing, and fire-purging effects.

The above outlines the reasons why children may vomit when coughing. We hope this information proves helpful.
