What should I do about a kidney cyst?
Renal cysts are common and frequently encountered conditions in urology. They can be broadly classified into simple renal cysts and polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Below, we provide a brief overview of simple renal cysts only.Simple renal cysts result from obstruction of the renal collecting ducts. For cysts measuring less than 4 cm in diameter, no treatment is typically required; instead, annual renal ultrasound monitoring is generally sufficient for routine follow-up.
For cysts measuring 4–8 cm, percutaneous aspiration followed by sclerotherapy is the standard clinical treatment. Larger cysts causing significant local compressive symptoms usually require surgical intervention. The most commonly employed procedure is laparoscopic decortication (cyst unroofing) with decompression, which alleviates symptoms by relieving the mass effect exerted by the cyst.
