Introduction
1. B-mode ultrasound examination and medical abortion are methods of terminating pregnancy, similar to surgical abortion. 2. Medical history assessment: A thorough and detailed medical history must be obtained, including any prior history of cardiovascular disease, asthma, liver disease, infectious diseases, etc. 3. Electrocardiogram (ECG) examination: An ECG must be performed prior to medical abortion; patients with abnormal ECG findings are contraindicated for medical abortion.

In daily life, many women may experience unintended pregnancy. If they are not prepared to have a child, termination of pregnancy—either via medical abortion (medication-induced abortion) or surgical abortion—must be considered. Regardless of the chosen method, appropriate preparations are essential. Specifically, prior to undergoing a medical abortion, women must complete relevant medical evaluations to minimize associated risks. So, what preparations are necessary before a medical abortion? Below, we address this question.

Preparations Required Before a Medical Abortion

1. Ultrasound Examination

Medical abortion is a method for terminating pregnancy—similar in purpose to surgical abortion. Consequently, the pre-procedure assessments for medical abortion largely overlap with those required for surgical abortion. First and foremost, an ultrasound examination is mandatory to confirm the presence of an intrauterine gestational sac. Only upon confirmation of an intrauterine pregnancy can the medical abortion proceed. If the pregnancy is ectopic (i.e., located outside the uterus), administering abortion medications would be inappropriate and potentially dangerous, with serious, even life-threatening consequences. Therefore, ultrasound must clearly demonstrate the size and precise location of the intrauterine gestational sac.

2. Comprehensive Medical History Review

A thorough review of the patient’s medical history is essential. This includes assessing prior conditions such as cardiovascular disease, asthma, liver disease, or infectious diseases. Since the medications used in medical abortion are metabolized by the liver and kidneys, certain contraindications exist—for example, patients with asthma or heart disease should not undergo medical abortion. Moreover, incomplete abortion may lead to severe hemorrhage and subsequent shock. Thus, it is imperative to consult a qualified physician to prevent excessive bleeding and safeguard the patient’s life.

3. Electrocardiogram (ECG) Examination

An ECG is mandatory prior to medical abortion. Patients with abnormal ECG findings must not undergo medical abortion, as this increases the risk of acute cardiac events. Additional laboratory tests—including complete blood count, liver and renal function tests, hepatitis B and C screening, coagulation profile, syphilis serology, and HIV testing—are also required, consistent with standard preoperative evaluation protocols. Although medical abortion is convenient and generally effective, improper use of medications may result in severe hemorrhage. Therefore, self-administration of abortion medications without medical supervision is strongly discouraged.

The above outlines key preparations required before undergoing a medical abortion. We hope this information is helpful to you.
