What placental grade indicates readiness for delivery?
In the late stages of pregnancy, multiple fetal ultrasound examinations are performed. In addition to assessing the fetus, these scans also evaluate placental maturity. On ultrasound imaging, placental maturity is classified into four grades: Grade 0, Grade I, Grade II, and Grade III. Placental grading does not have an absolute correlation with the timing of maternal delivery. It is important to note that if ultrasound reveals a Grade III placenta, this indicates some degree of placental aging. As the placenta ages, its capacity to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the fetus may decline, thereby increasing the risk of fetal hypoxia in utero. Therefore, when ultrasound indicates a Grade III placenta, physicians must comprehensively assess the fetus’s intrauterine condition and, if necessary, intervene medically to facilitate delivery.
