Why Does My Baby Have Eye Discharge?
Every family eagerly awaits the birth of their baby with profound reverence for life. After the baby arrives, parents naturally hope to nurture their child’s healthy growth through attentive care. However, some parents notice persistent eye discharge (“eye boogers”) in their infant and become especially concerned—wondering whether the baby is “overheated” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept referring to excessive internal heat) or suffering from another underlying issue. Consequently, many parents seek reliable information about the causes of infant eye discharge. It is crucial for caregivers to take this symptom seriously and address it appropriately for optimal outcomes.

What Causes Eye Discharge in Babies?
1. Internal Heat (“Overheating”)
When a baby experiences internal heat, eye discharge may suddenly increase and is often accompanied by symptoms such as heat intolerance, excessive sweating, and constipation. In such cases, mothers should encourage the baby to consume more fruits and vegetables and drink adequate water, while promptly adjusting dietary habits to alleviate these symptoms.
2. Bacterial Infection
If eye discharge increases abruptly, and is accompanied by eyelid redness and swelling, increased tearing, and conjunctival injection (redness of the eye), the baby may have developed bacterial conjunctivitis. In this case, prompt treatment with topical antibiotic eye drops and erythromycin ointment is recommended.

3. Immature Nasolacrimal Duct Development
A newborn’s nasolacrimal duct is often narrow and short, impeding proper tear drainage and leading to accumulation of eye discharge. Parents can gently massage the baby’s nasal bridge to help open the duct—but must do so very gently and carefully.
4. Foreign Body Irritation
If a foreign object enters the baby’s eye and is not promptly removed, it may cause irritation, resulting in symptoms such as a foreign-body sensation, blurred vision, ocular itching, pain, and increased eye discharge.
The above outlines common causes of eye discharge in infants. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
