Introduction
In general, it is not recommended to drink coffee during menstruation. Coffee contains caffeine—a stimulant that can excite the nervous and cardiovascular systems—and may interfere with uterine contractions during this period. Consuming coffee while menstruating may exacerbate symptoms such as dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding), prolonged menstrual periods, and breast tenderness.

A woman’s body is particularly vulnerable during menstruation, and dietary choices require special attention—otherwise, menstrual irregularities may easily occur. Many women enjoy drinking coffee regularly, especially office workers, for whom moderate coffee consumption offers certain benefits, primarily enhancing alertness and mental clarity. However, some women worry whether it is safe to drink coffee during their period. So, can women drink coffee during menstruation? Below, we address this question.

Can women drink coffee during menstruation?

Generally speaking, it is not recommended to drink coffee during menstruation. Coffee contains caffeine—a stimulant that can excite the nervous and cardiovascular systems, potentially interfering with uterine contractions during the menstrual period. Consuming coffee while menstruating may exacerbate dysmenorrhea (painful periods), increase menstrual flow, prolong the duration of menstruation, or cause breast tenderness. However, individual constitutions vary; if you experience no adverse effects after drinking coffee, moderate consumption is acceptable—as long as intake remains within reasonable limits. During menstruation, diet should emphasize light, easily digestible foods. Spicy, fried, or highly acidic foods should be minimized or avoided altogether, as they may impair digestion or stimulate excessive menstrual bleeding.

Additional Information: Foods to Avoid During Menstruation

1. Bamboo Shoots

Bamboo shoots are considered “cold” in nature according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and contain abundant coarse fiber and calcium oxalate. Women are advised to avoid them during menstruation. TCM describes bamboo shoots as sweet-tasting and slightly cold, non-toxic, with therapeutic properties including clearing heat, resolving phlegm, tonifying Qi, harmonizing the stomach, alleviating thirst, promoting diuresis, and improving gastric comfort. Although nutritionally beneficial and delicious, consuming bamboo shoots during menstruation may reduce menstrual flow; thus, women are best advised to avoid them during this time.

2. Watermelon

Watermelon is a “cold”-natured fruit—cool and slippery in quality. Eating watermelon during menstruation may hinder digestion and deplete the body’s Yang energy, potentially leading to internal cold accumulation. Rich in water, various amino acids, and sugars, watermelon effectively clears heat, relieves summer heat, and quenches thirst—making it an excellent choice for hydration. Nevertheless, women should limit intake of cooling foods during menstruation; therefore, those who enjoy watermelon are advised to avoid it entirely during their period.

The above outlines whether women can drink coffee during menstruation. We hope this information proves helpful.
