Introduction
1. Apply cold compresses to the eyes—for example, chilled cucumber slices—to help reduce swelling; alternatively, refrigerate metal spoons and use them as cold compresses. 2. Perform gentle eye massage, similar to the eye exercises commonly practiced by schoolchildren. 3. Ensure adequate sleep to allow the eyes to fully relax, thereby helping alleviate puffiness caused by eye strain. 4. Cosmetic surgery—typically double eyelid surgery—is an option for more permanent correction.

Puffy eyelids—also known as “water-filled eyelids” or “swollen eyelids”—are typically caused by congenital factors or aging, leading to laxity of the orbital septum, protrusion of orbital fat, or ptosis (drooping) of the lacrimal gland. As a result, the upper eyelid appears swollen and thickened; in severe cases, a pronounced, eave-like droop develops in the outer eyelid region, giving the eyes a triangular appearance and narrowing the palpebral fissure.

What Can Be Done About Puffy Eyelids?

1. Cold Compresses

Eyelid puffiness is primarily due to fluid accumulation in the periorbital tissues. Cold compresses can effectively alleviate this swelling—for instance, chilled cucumber slices are particularly beneficial. To apply, lie flat on your back and place the cucumber slices over your closed eyes for 15 minutes or until they reach room temperature. Alternatively, chill a metal spoon in the refrigerator and use it for cold compresses each morning.

2. Eyelid Massage

This technique is simple and somewhat resembles the eye exercises many of us performed during childhood—but instead of applying pressure around the orbital rim, focus the massage closer to the eyelid margins. Ensure complete relaxation throughout the process; perform movements slowly to allow the eyelids to fully experience both gentle stretching and subsequent release. This not only helps reduce swelling but also feels soothing and aids in relieving ocular fatigue.

3. Adequate Sleep

Given today’s widespread use of electronic devices, visual fatigue has become increasingly common—making relaxation and calming essential. Steam eye masks are especially suitable for winter use, effectively alleviating dryness and providing strong soothing effects that help relax the eyes. Consequently, they may also improve puffiness resulting from excessive eye strain.

4. Cosmetic Surgery

Puffy eyelids can be corrected surgically. A relatively straightforward approach involves removing excess tissue through a small incision solely for this purpose; however, this method is generally not recommended. Even minimal incisions may leave visible traces. Instead, surgeons typically combine puffy eyelid correction with double-eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), achieving more significant and aesthetically pleasing improvements in eyelid contour and appearance.

The above outlines various approaches to managing puffy eyelids. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
