Introduction
Under normal circumstances, the reference range for ovarian size in adult women is as follows: length 2.5–5.0 cm, width 1.5–3 cm, and thickness 0.6–1.5 cm. In early menopause, the dimensions are approximately 2 cm in length, 1.5 cm in width, and 0.5 cm in thickness. In late menopause, they measure approximately 1.5 cm in length, 0.75 cm in width, and 0.5 cm in thickness. Additionally, the ovaries are located within the pelvic cavity.

In general, after women enter menopause, ovarian function undergoes physiological decline. To delay this decline, sex hormone therapy is commonly used—but uterine disorders must first be ruled out. Additionally, adequate rest and avoidance of late-night activities are recommended in daily life. If ovarian inflammation occurs, active anti-inflammatory treatment is warranted; if hormonal secretion is insufficient, hormone replacement therapy may be indicated. So, what is the normal size of ovaries? The following addresses this question.

Normal Ovarian Size

Typically, the reference range for normal ovarian dimensions in adult women is as follows: length 2.5–5.0 cm, width 1.5–3.0 cm, and thickness 0.6–1.5 cm. In early postmenopause, average dimensions are approximately 2.0 cm in length, 1.5 cm in width, and 0.5 cm in thickness; in late postmenopause, they decrease further to about 1.5 cm in length, 0.75 cm in width, and 0.5 cm in thickness. The ovaries are located within the pelvic cavity and serve as vital female reproductive organs and endocrine glands. Ovarian size is not fixed—it reaches its maximum during sexual maturity and gradually diminishes with advancing age. Nevertheless, ovarian size remains within defined physiological ranges across different life stages. Clinically, both enlarged and reduced ovarian volumes relative to normal values may occur.

Knowledge Extension: What to Do When Ovarian Function Is Impaired

1. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Avoid excessive or overly frequent sexual activity, which may deplete kidney essence, yin, and yang—leading to kidney qi deficiency and subsequently contributing to ovarian dysfunction, vaginal dryness, and worsening amenorrhea. Regular physical exercise, smoking cessation (including avoidance of secondhand smoke), and overall physical conditioning are also essential. Furthermore, routine gynecological care is important; any signs of gynecological infection should be promptly diagnosed and treated.

2. Optimize Dietary Habits

Ensure adequate daily protein intake from sources such as lean meats, legumes, and dairy products. Moderate consumption of carbohydrates and healthy fats is also recommended. Additionally, increase intake of fresh fruits and green vegetables—particularly those rich in vitamin E and vitamin D. Vitamin E helps neutralize free radicals, restore skin elasticity, and slow gonadal atrophy.

3. Estrogen Supplementation

Premature ovarian insufficiency often results from inadequate estrogen production, which can disrupt menstrual cycles and cause vaginal dryness. Therefore, estrogen supplementation may help regulate systemic hormone levels and effectively alleviate symptoms of ovarian functional decline. Patients must strictly follow their physician’s instructions when using such therapies to avoid potential adverse effects.
