Introduction
If you have the habit of chewing betel nuts or gum, it is advisable to discontinue it as soon as possible. Prolonged and frequent chewing activates facial muscles, leading to enlargement and increased hardness of the masseter muscle. In daily life, opt for liquid or semi-liquid foods whenever possible, as this helps reduce chewing frequency and minimizes masseter muscle activity.

Enlarged masseter muscles are a common concern for many individuals. If facial fullness is caused by excess fat, weight loss is relatively straightforward. However, if facial width stems from hypertrophied masseter muscles, reduction becomes significantly more challenging. That said, it is not impossible to reduce masseter size. Below, we outline several effective methods for slimming the masseter muscles.

How to Reduce Masseter Muscle Size

Reduce Chewing Frequency to Minimize Masseter Hypertrophy

If you habitually chew betel nuts or gum, discontinue these practices as soon as possible. Prolonged and frequent chewing activates facial musculature, leading to increased masseter size and firmness. Opt for liquid or semi-liquid foods in daily meals to lower chewing frequency and minimize masseter muscle activity.

Tap and Massage to Relax the Masseter Muscles

Perform the following relaxation techniques twice daily—once in the morning and once in the evening—to gradually soften the masseter muscles.

After cleansing your face, warm your hands by rubbing them together, then gently tap both sides of your cheeks until the skin appears slightly flushed. Gently clench your teeth to make the masseter muscles protrude. Then, make fists and use the knuckle surfaces of your four fingers to gently massage the masseter muscles for 10 minutes. Finally, slightly open your mouth and gently sway your lower dental arch side-to-side to further relax the muscles.

Botulinum Toxin Injections (“Slim-Face Injections”) for Masseter Reduction

“Slim-face injections” work by injecting botulinum toxin to block neuromuscular transmission, thereby relaxing overactive muscles and reducing hypertrophy. This treatment specifically targets masseter muscle enlargement but has no effect on facial fat reduction.

However, botulinum toxin injections carry certain risks, including transient facial swelling, asymmetry between the two sides of the face, and temporary facial muscle stiffness. Therefore, this method should be approached with caution when considering facial contouring.

The above methods represent some of the most commonly used approaches for reducing masseter muscle size. While all are generally effective, they differ in onset time and associated risks. Please carefully consider your individual needs and select the option best suited to you.
