Generally, the optimal time to undergo a 4D ultrasound is around 20 weeks of gestation. At this stage, the fetus has grown to a relatively large size, and amniotic fluid volume is abundant, allowing the fetus to move and stretch more freely within the uterus. Therefore, this period is ideal for conducting fetal anomaly screening.

A 4D ultrasound during pregnancy is performed to screen for and rule out fetal congenital anomalies. Typically, physicians recommend that pregnant women undergo this examination after 20 weeks of gestation, as by this stage the fetus’s organs and body structures are largely developed, and amniotic fluid volume is optimal for high-quality 4D imaging—allowing for clearer detection of structural abnormalities.

When Is the Optimal Time for a Comprehensive 4D Ultrasound?

Generally, the ideal time for a 4D ultrasound is around 20 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, the fetus has grown sufficiently in size, and amniotic fluid volume is relatively abundant, allowing the baby greater freedom to stretch and move within the uterus. Consequently, this period is especially suitable for comprehensive anomaly screening. Moreover, by this time most fetal structures are fully developed, enabling visualization of facial expressions and adorable movements via 4D imaging.

Pregnant women are advised to schedule the scan during periods of peak fetal activity, as increased movement—particularly full extension of limbs—facilitates more thorough and accurate anomaly assessment. If the fetus remains uncooperative during the scan—for instance, sleeping or lying face-down—the expectant mother may gently stimulate fetal movement through physical activity. Climbing stairs is one of the most commonly recommended methods. Fetal-maternal interaction is bidirectional: when the mother senses increased fetal movement during stair climbing, it signals an ideal moment to proceed with the examination—ensuring optimal visualization of fetal development.

In fact, all conventional B-mode ultrasound examinations performed throughout pregnancy serve the primary purpose of fetal anomaly screening. The mid-pregnancy 4D ultrasound, however, offers a uniquely comprehensive, multi-angle assessment of fetal development within the uterine environment.
