Introduction
For patients with diabetes, salt intake is critically important and should be kept within a specific range. Diabetes itself is associated with numerous complications, including hypertension—a chronic complication of diabetes. Diabetic patients should limit their daily salt intake to approximately 3–6 grams, and must not exceed 6 grams per day.

Diabetes, put simply, is a condition characterized by abnormal blood glucose levels. Many delicious foods taste great precisely because they contain substantial amounts of added sugar. But what about salt? Should people with diabetes also limit their salt intake? Below, we address this question.

Should People with Diabetes Limit Their Salt Intake?

For individuals with diabetes, salt intake is critically important and must be strictly controlled within recommended limits. Diabetes is associated with numerous complications, one of which—hypertension—is a common chronic complication. People with diabetes should aim to consume no more than 3–6 grams of salt per day; thus, daily salt intake should not exceed 6 grams.

Prolonged excessive salt consumption may impair insulin’s ability to regulate glucose effectively, leading to significant fluctuations in blood glucose levels. Such fluctuations can interfere with the efficacy of antidiabetic medications and potentially worsen disease progression. It should be noted, however, that current research only suggests a possible association between high salt intake and impaired glucose metabolism—not a definitive causal relationship.

In daily life, it is essential not only to monitor obvious sources of salt but also “hidden” salt found in condiments and processed foods—such as soy sauce, pickled vegetables, and fermented bean paste (dajiang). For instance, some people frequently add dajiang while cooking, inadvertently increasing their salt intake. Therefore, total daily salt consumption must remain under 6 grams. Additionally, diverse cooking methods—including stir-frying, braising, steaming, and boiling—should be employed to help stabilize blood glucose control and minimize salt intake.

The above provides an overview of whether people with diabetes should limit their salt intake. We hope this information is helpful to you.
