Introduction
Anoscopy is primarily used to examine the anus for inflammation, edema, tumors, and ulcers. In contrast, colonoscopy encompasses several types—including enteroscopy (small bowel endoscopy), sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, and proctoscopy—and is a commonly employed method to detect mucosal abnormalities such as hyperemia, edema, inflammation, erosion, ulcers, and tumors in the colon, rectum, sigmoid colon, and small intestine.

How is anoscopy performed? The standard procedure for proctological examination begins with a detailed medical history (interview), followed by external inspection of the anus, then visual inspection, digital rectal examination (DRE), and finally anoscopy. Many people are unfamiliar with anoscopy; however, it enables accurate visualization of the rectal mucosa to detect any abnormal protrusions or lesions.

What is Proctoscopy?

As its name suggests, proctoscopy encompasses both anoscopy and colonoscopy—and is the most commonly used endoscopic examination method in proctology.

Anoscopy primarily evaluates the anal region for signs of inflammation, edema, tumors, or ulcers. Colonoscopy includes several types—such as enteroscopy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, and rectoscopy—and is routinely used to identify mucosal abnormalities—including congestion, edema, inflammation, erosion, ulceration, or neoplasms—in the colon, rectum, sigmoid colon, and small intestine.

Proctologists use these endoscopic tools to observe mucosal changes and make preliminary diagnoses; biopsies can also be obtained during the procedure for histopathological analysis.

During anoscopy, a lubricant (often a water-soluble gel) is applied to the outer surface of the anoscope. The tip of the anoscope is gently massaged around the anal verge to promote relaxation of the anal sphincter, after which the instrument is slowly advanced along the axis toward the umbilicus. The obturator is then withdrawn to allow direct visualization. This technique minimizes patient discomfort and reduces procedural distress.

Proctological disorders are highly prevalent in daily life. To prevent such conditions, individuals should maintain good personal health habits—avoiding consumption of unhygienic or contaminated food. Should symptoms suggestive of proctological disease arise, prompt medical evaluation and treatment are essential.
