Introduction
Warm compresses are contraindicated in cases of conjunctivitis, as they often exacerbate the condition. Instead, cool compresses may be appropriately applied to help reduce ocular congestion and edema, thereby alleviating eye irritation. Conversely, warm compresses tend to worsen congestion and intensify eye irritation symptoms.

When diagnosed with conjunctivitis (“pink eye”), people commonly adopt certain essential treatment measures. At home, one simple and convenient method is applying a towel compress to the eyes. However, this raises an important question: Should the compress be cold or warm? What is the correct and most effective method?

Can Warm Compresses Be Used for Conjunctivitis?

Warm compresses are not recommended for conjunctivitis, as they may exacerbate the condition. Instead, cool (cold) compresses are appropriate and beneficial—they help reduce ocular congestion and edema, and alleviate eye irritation. In contrast, warm compresses often intensify redness and worsen irritation symptoms.

Therefore, warm compresses must be strictly avoided. Upon developing conjunctivitis, timely and appropriate medication—prescribed and guided by a healthcare professional—is essential to significantly relieve symptoms. Additionally, strict self-isolation is crucial: avoid crowded public places such as swimming pools or farmers’ markets, where transmission risk is high.

Ideally, remain in isolation at home, avoiding exposure to bright light, heat, and airborne dust or wind. When going outdoors, wear protective eyewear—but staying indoors is preferable. Also, avoid spicy or irritating foods.

If using tissues or moist wipes to clean the eyes, dispose of them immediately in a covered trash bin. If using towels, place them directly into the laundry basket after use—do not allow others to handle them. After cleaning both eyes, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.

For conjunctivitis, only cold compresses are suitable—not warm ones. At home, applying a cold towel compress to the affected eye(s) can help alleviate symptoms and promote faster recovery, enabling you to overcome conjunctivitis sooner and regain your health and confidence.

We hope the above information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
