Symptoms and Treatment of Umbilical Hernia in Children
Pediatric umbilical hernia is an abdominal wall hernia resulting from protrusion of the intestine, omentum, or other intra-abdominal contents through the umbilical ring. It is a congenital disorder caused by incomplete development of the umbilicus. The condition typically improves with age and resolves spontaneously in most children by age two; however, surgical intervention may be required for the minority of cases that do not resolve spontaneously.

Symptoms and Treatment of Pediatric Umbilical Hernia
Symptoms of pediatric umbilical hernia include a visible bulge or swelling at the umbilicus, slight bluish discoloration of the overlying skin, and occasionally pain. Surgical repair is the definitive treatment.
Pediatric umbilical hernia occurs when intra-abdominal contents protrude through the umbilical ring—commonly due to congenital factors such as incomplete closure of the umbilical ring or inherent weakness of the umbilical tissues. Increased intra-abdominal pressure (e.g., during crying) can cause the hernia to become apparent, manifesting as a soft, reducible bulge at the umbilicus. The surrounding skin may appear slightly cyanotic. When the child is calm and relaxed, the bulge often reduces spontaneously. Mild cases are usually asymptomatic and painless; however, severe cases—particularly those complicated by adhesions between the herniated contents and the hernia sac—may cause discomfort or pain.
Most pediatric umbilical hernias resolve spontaneously by age two. However, if the hernia persists beyond this age, especially if the umbilical ring diameter exceeds 1.5 cm or if adhesions develop, timely surgical repair using a mesh patch is recommended. This approach effectively reduces the risk of recurrence. Postoperatively, meticulous local wound care is essential to prevent infection.
For breastfeeding mothers, it is advisable to avoid spicy foods (e.g., spicy strips, hot-and-sour rice noodles), as these may adversely affect the infant’s wound healing.
