Introduction
For use as an emergency contraceptive pill after unprotected intercourse, it is important to understand that this medication is not an abortifacient and should not be used as a regular contraceptive method. Reliable contraception must be used from the time the pill is taken until the onset of the next menstrual period. If vomiting occurs within two hours of taking the pill, an additional dose should be taken immediately.

Aside from Yuting, there is another emergency contraceptive pill called Jinyuting. The names of these two pills differ by only one Chinese character—so which is better: Yuting or Jinyuting? And what are their key differences?

Which is Better: Jinyuting or Yuting?

Compared with Yuting, Jinyuting is generally considered safer and associated with fewer side effects. Jinyuting is administered as a single tablet per dose, whereas Yuting requires two tablets per dose. The only drawback of Jinyuting is its slightly higher cost, while Yuting is relatively more affordable.

Both medications are intended for emergency post-coital contraception—not for inducing abortion—and must never be used as routine, long-term contraceptives. During the period from drug administration until the onset of the next menstrual cycle, reliable contraceptive measures should be employed. If vomiting occurs within two hours after taking the medication, an additional dose should be taken immediately. These drugs may cause the next menstrual period to occur earlier or later than expected. Should menstruation be delayed by one week or more, prompt medical evaluation—including pregnancy testing—is essential.

These medications are contraindicated in patients with: breast cancer or genital cancers; abnormal liver function, recent hepatitis or jaundice; venous thrombosis; cerebrovascular accidents (e.g., stroke); hypertension; cardiovascular disease; diabetes mellitus; hyperlipidemia; major depressive disorder; and in women aged 40 years or older.

Although both Yuting and Jinyuting are contraceptive agents, neither is free from potential adverse effects. Yuting, for instance, may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, temporary infertility, or mood disturbances such as depression. Therefore, careful attention must be paid when using any hormonal contraceptive. It is important to recognize that no contraceptive pill offers 100% efficacy or absolute safety; effectiveness and safety profiles vary among individuals. Accordingly, users should select and use these medications based on their personal health status and under appropriate medical guidance.
